I have always been a big fan of Halloween. Some of my favorite memories growing up are of me helping my dad decorate his office with spider webs for trick or treating while watching It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and Hocus Pocus. I loved the feelings of excitement and creativity that this time of year ushered in.

Fast-forward 25 years, and I still enjoy the process of getting ready for Halloween, although my days feel so much more rushed as of late. Through the process of the big move, my husband’s career change, another pregnancy and the overall feel of trying to get settled in a new area, Halloween snuck up on us this year. My sister invited us to her town square trick or treating, and I was the embarrassed mother who had not put any costumes together–my children were the sad little beings trick or treating in broken fairy wings and an ill-fitting cat mask.

Lily didn’t care one bit–she has been pretending to be a kitty nonstop for weeks now, so she was still thrilled to put on a kitty mask and go out. I think this was the first year she started to understand the concept of trick or treating and dressing up, and it was thrilling to watch her have so much fun. I decided to get myself in order and put together a real costume together. The next day we went to the fabric store and I went into high-gear putting together outfits for Hazel and Lily to wear in two days.

In the end, I was happy with how the costumes turned out, so much so that I think I may add a line of Halloween outfits to my little Etsy shop next year. We went down to the end of the street to grab a couple of quick pictures (I forgot to paint their little noses and whiskers on before we took them)…please enjoy these pictures of Hazel’s first time out on Halloween!
